WHITEWASH Jan Peacock 1989 15 min 7 sec
"You can imagine everything... you invent nothing ".- In Whitewash, two themes are fused together through a disordering and reordering of the conventions of the T.V. news format and domestically sited T.V. commercials. One of these themes is the way in which T.V conventions are collected and remembered, framing experience and affecting the formation of identity. In the character of a female news anchor, we are presented with a compendium of television behaviours and gestures which at every turn interfere with her own process of attempting to write the character of her inner self. The second theme questions the authority conferring power of these conventions. Whitewash challenges the assumption that information is inherent in the familiar forms of the T.V. news format and in commercials which are constructed to prove the success of their products. Whitewash presents television as a world of appearances whose familiarity induces in us "the sleep of complicity", the semi-conscious state in which we absorb ideologies.
MATTSCHEIBE Christoph Doering 1989 5 min

UPSTAIRS Angela Hanke-Wahls 1990 5 mm 30 sec
'Upstairs is my second film with a description of place as its subject. The film is not based on a story, but there derives a sequence of image/sound built after its own rules. I use fragments of my personal way of perception and experience of this place like a collage, and by overlapping the aesthetic and emotional levels try to give the viewer room for his own associations, which on the other hand can arouse his own emotional involvement.' ANGELA HANKE-WAHLS
MAOS BIBEL Antal Lux 1990 8 min 20 sec
Mao's instructions and the thoughts of the red leader were critically observed and subjected to sarcastic visual commentary. Nonsensical propositions were emphasized and the fragments joined together into a new visual unity. A radio play by Helga M. Novak served as a basis.

A complete history of Modern Art in five minutes of Spanglish. An art historian (Martiniquen singer Chantal Remion) sings in a relaxed Latin mood, 'Salvador Dali es luno...Pollock el splishos y splashos...enormous lumpo Moore'.
