A selection of videoshorts.
Artists include -
Antal Bodozky [Hungary];
Boryana Dragoeva [Bulgaria];
Kai Kaljo [Estonia];
Barbara Konopka [Poland];
Alia Pigalskaia [Belarus];
Ekaterina Rondel [Belarus];
Dimitrina Sevova [Bulgaria];
Zornitsa Sophia [Bulgaria];
Anja Smajdek [Slovenia];
Maria Natascha Stukoff [Australia/ England].
Telling the story of time through the personal language of gestures, incidents, generations, codes and little pleasures, these richly poetic, time-based works stand in opposition to the millennium frenzy and the narrative of grand ideologies and instead explore the aesthetics of minimalism through the genre of videoshorts.
This collection of works were conceived to coincide with 'The Other Side of Zero' as part of 'Crossing Over', an annual mini-international festival of producing and presenting videoshorts which thematically explores the crosscultural metaphor of the journey. 'Crossing Over' is about passing through the localities of cultures, technologies, art disciplines, geographies and economies.
The project philosophy of the journey is also manifested in the nomadic nature of the project. 'Crossing Over' is always on the road, moving westwards to different cities each year - from its inception in 1996 and 1997 in Sofia to Novi Sad in 1998 and Ljubljana in 1999. A unique feature of 'Crossing Over' is that in addition to the production-driven residencies for selected artists there is an emphasis on public events including special presentations by international and local guests.
Thus, 'Crossing Over' plugs into the immediate regional cultural scene as well as reflecting on a wealth of diverse experiences from afar. In its modest scale each 'Crossing Over' contributes to the local cultural ecologies. [Iliyana Nedkova]
