Video in Australia : Electric Images', is an exhibition package of 11 single channel video works made by established and emerging Australian artists/video producers especially curated for Video Positive '91.


The program is a unique mix of discreet worlds and labyrinthe narratives of fractured images and human expriences of the body; language; the city; desire; satellites; the electric image.
Many of the works selected for this program are characterised by the fact that they were produced in part in either a home studio environment, a media department in an art school or University.or in independently managed studios operating on shoe-string budgets.
There are many challenges in Australia's relatively unknown and underdeveloped video culture and even though many new media based organisations were established in the late 80s, no major museums and state funded galleries as yet employ curators specialising in the media arts.


This screening package, which has been supported by the Australia Council, aims to promote and exhibit 'local' works to an international audience and also to develop further the electronic arts in Australia.(Sydney March 1991)

A computer aided video clip, Life Flight is a personal expression of intuition versus logic, set in another time and space.
CROWDSEEN Brad Miller 1991 6 min
A "desk top " video of looped image sequences of rioting crowds, public demonstrations (from various sources) and close up of unidentified surveillance equipment, Crowdseen is a pictorial display of modern technological culture gone wrong as a potent remainder of the social political upheaval of this century.
THE BIG PICTURE Ross Harley 1990 2 min
Satellite Images from the Persian Gulf War in late 1990 are ironically exploited through the use of complex post production techniques - an engaging hyper reality of text and double meanings.
NEO GEO : AN AMERICAN PURCHASE Peter Callas 1989 9 min
The title Neo Geo is a veiled reference to 'The New World' and what America has made of it. Many of the American territories were originally called 'Purchases' bought as they were from other Western colonial powers (France, Spain, Tzarist Russia). This tape utilises popular icons drawn from American culture to portray the processes of 'endocolonization' by which governments lacking any real terrain to colonize at the end of history, enact imperialist designs on their own populations. The mind of the 'American ' is the virtual and infinitely manipulable terrain of Neo Geo.

Techno/ Dumb/ Show is a video exploring live performance and melodrama where the divided self is not split but shattered and the pieces are gathered together in gestures of pure display.

There's maybe an event in a person's life that will cause them to change the way they experience the passing of time and the nature of their existence. When six minutes and thirty seconds may seem more like...Well...six minutes and twenty five seconds.

A video combining virtual space computer animation with paint-box aesthetics, ENS was produced with the 'cinematic experience' in mind. ENS is an interpretation of a man-machine universe driven by mathematics and dreaming experiences.

Hence radio, television, x-rays, permed hair, the tides, ribbed condoms, oscilloscpes, radium plutonium, gravity waves, waterbeds, Mexican waves, the movement of reptiles, information from satellites, corrugated iron and the Queen's right hand.

All Saints Day is a video music clip produced with Amiga computer graphics and video synthesis effects.
MOODEITJYORGAS (SOLID WOMEN) Tracey Moffatt 1989 22 mins How can someone speak of who they are through a language that is not theirs? How can we represent what we feel, which never really finds material form? Moodeitj Yorgas attempts to offer solutions through an historical account of representation. Alternatively, Moffatt has sought radically simple solutions in the presentation of her material to represent the strength of aboriginal women. Her people speak, but we are reminded that it is not their language we hear. Alternatively, when the language of aboriginal women is used, their faces and bodies become an elaborate design of dance and colour.
