Description:
Screened throughout DECENT EXPOSURE. Sign language is a visual representation of language used for communicating ideas and is part of the social and cultural identity of deaf people. It is a complex system of language involving spatial/temporal concepts to convey meaning and emotion.

The level of hearing is a medical issue; many partially hearing people choose to use sign language to supplement an aural language, as a means of adding another dimension to self expression. Sign language, although a language in itself, has not fully realised its potential as an artistic medium.

The purpose of this project is to use video and computer animation together with sign language to create a new visual perspective with which to spark debate about deaf culture.

Video needs to be more widely used by the deaf community but access to the technology is often a problem. SILENTVIEW is a volunteer led organisation. Its aim is to encourage deaf people to actively engage with technology. The work from this project will be accessible to both deaf and hearing audiences.
