Description:
Two vivid and accomplished long-form works which focus on the continuing social and cultural upheavals in Central and Eastern Europe.

FORMER EAST/FORMER WEST intercuts vox pop footage of Berliners from either side of the former divide and contrasts their conflicting descriptions of past, present and future with deft sideways glances at a city undergoing astonishing, almost unimaginable change.

Taking Berlin as its starting point, then journeying through Poland and Hungary before finally alighting in Prague, Jem Cohen's BURIED IN LIGHT is a haunting film-and-video travelogue in which quiet, introspective observations combine with beautifully composed black-and-white images of uncanny, often visionary power.

BURIED IN LIGHT-Jem Cohen/USA 1995;
FORMER EAST/FORMER WEST - Shelly Silver/USA 1994.
