Description:
Fanni Niemi Junkola's previous work has explored physical struggle and attempts at communication between people who appear to be in conflict or at odds with one another. In 'Giants'[1998] two women appear to be fighting one another on an uninhabited island.

The ambiguities of movement and interplay make an attempted punch appear as a clumsy caress -these women need each other.
In 'Pro-Boxers' Niemi Junkola interviews boxers about their lives, conflict, physical pain, adjusting to 'normality' outside the ring. This fascinating installation explores the complexities of communication.

For 'The Other Side of Zero', she has made a new video installation with staff, volunteers and clients from Kirkby Women's Community Action Group, a self-organising, grass-roots organisation who are working to provide advice, support and personal development opportunities for local women.

The work has been made through a collaborative process, researching the area, identifying the group, developing a rapport through a series of conversations, meetings and discussions around the perceptions and presentation of self and community -individually and collectively.

One after the other, seven women speak directly to the camera, telling a little about their everyday lives, revealing associations and connections to form a deeper expression of shared experiences.
