Maria Vedder was born in Nordhorn,
Germany. After completing her studies
in photography and in the social
sciences, as well as theatre, film and
television, she lectured in electronic
media at the University of Cologne.
In 1990 she was visting professor at the
Fauchhochshule Dusseldorf and in
1990/91 visiting professor at the
Hochschule fur Kunste in Bremen.
She is a founding member of Media Art
Production E.V, a centre for the arts and
research into the production and
presentation of new media. Vedder is
also the author of of two books about
video (in association with B.
Gruber), 'Kunst und Video' and 'DuMonts
Handbuch der Videopraxis', both
published by the DuMont publishing
house in Cologne, Germany.
In 1988 Vedder and Gruber won the
main 'Marler Video Art Award' for their
video 'The Heartbeat Of Anubis' and in
1991 Vedder was awarded the main
prize at the Vigo International Video
festival in Spain.
Vedder has exhibited in Europe,
Australia and Canada. Her video tapes
have been shown all over the world in
collaboration with the Goethe Institut.
Many works have entered the Ludwig
Museum collection in Cologne and the
collection of the Tate Gallery Liverpool,
England.
